Things You Must Know Before Enrolling in a Fashion Design Course

So you’ve decided you want enroll in a Fashion Design course. What are the important things that you must know before you take the plunge and begin a program in Fashion Design?

1) What sort of course is best for you?
It’s not simply a case of browsing a University prospectus and hoping to make sense of the BSc and MSc lists. You can learn about Fashion Design in a number of ways, and a traditional degree may not be the best. (If you decide it is, it would actually be a BA – Bachelor of Arts). Research first and see if there are other shorter courses you can start with to give you a taster and ensure it’s what you really want. Also, look into specialisms you may want to branch into later; is your favourite part actually working with textiles and sewing machines? Or maybe you prefer the conceptual design?

2) It’s not as glamorous as you think it is
It’s not all catwalk models and fashion shows. Don’t forget, somebody has to design all the day-to-day clothes in high street stores too! You must be realistic about your future career

3) It’s hard work
A lot of people see Fashion Design as a ‘soft’ or ‘easy’ subject, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Expect long hours perfecting your designs and bringing them to life, and you’ll need patience when completing detailed or delicate work.

4) You need resilience
It’s a competitive industry and you have to keep on trying to succeed. Some of the techniques may be difficult to learn and you may feel lacking in inspiration, but keep on pushing through your course.

5) Set yourself apart and have unique ideas
To succeed in your course you’ll need to have new ideas, the more unusual the better. Your imagination is the limit, and unless you have some quirky plans, then you’ll get bored quickly – and people will get bored with your designs too. You can’t sit still in Fashion Design; keep an eye on trends and what’s popular, or you could miss great opportunities.

Good luck with your Fashion Design program, whichever one you decide to choose!
